Bape

Bape (also known as A Bathing Ape) was founded in 1993 in Harajuku by designer Nigo and Jun Tatakashi (also the founder of Undercover).

Prior to that, the two founders opened a store together called “Nowhere.” Shortly thereafter, they founded the fashion label Bape. “A Bathing Ape” comes from Japanese and refers to the Japanese idiom “A bathing ape in lukewarm water.” This describes someone who devotes themselves to something with complete contentment.

Bape is particularly known for its unmistakable camouflage designs, which can be seen on virtually every piece of clothing the brand produces. The inspiration for this camouflage design came from the classic film “Planet of the Apes.”

Bape is also known for reimagining very popular silhouettes from brands like Nike and adidas in its own unique way. For example, if you look at the Bape Sta Low sneaker and compare it to a Nike Air Force 1, you can see a clear resemblance. The same is true for the Bape Sk8 Sta sneakers and the Nike Dunk sneakers.

A Bathing Ape also collaborates with many brands across all industries. These include Nike, adidas, Vans, Bearbrick, Alpha Industries, Kid Cudi, Uno, Pokémon, Swatch, OVO / Drake, Levi’s, Dr. Martens, Anti Social Social Club, Mitchell & Ness, Coca-Cola, Dragon Ball Z, Timberland, and Star Wars.

The brand specializes in lifestyle items as well as streetwear for men, women, children, and, in some cases, babies. They currently have 19 stores in Japan. In 2013, designer Nigo left the label and has since been working for fashion brands such as Kenzo, Human Made, and Billionaire Boys Club (BBC).
