adidas pays 2.1 billion euros for Reebok

In 1895, at the age of 14, Joseph William Foster began working in his bedroom above his father’s candy store in Bolton, England.

He designed some of the first running shoes with spikes. Once his ideas were a bit more refined, he founded his company, “J.W. Foster,” in 1900. Later, he joined forces with his sons and changed the company name to “J.W. Foster and Sons.” Foster opened a small factory called “Olympic Works” and gradually became famous among athletes for his “running shoes.”.

The company began marketing its shoes in the United Kingdom under the name “Reebok.” These were worn directly by British athletes. They gained fame at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, worn by, among others, 100-meter Olympic champion Harold Abrahams.

Following a lawsuit in August 2005, Adidas acquired Reebok as a subsidiary, thereby uniting two of the world’s largest sportswear manufacturers. Of course, Adidas continued to operate Reebok under its separate brand name. Adidas closed the deal, which was valued at $3.8 billion. Following the acquisition, Adidas replaced Reebok as the official uniform supplier for the NBA in 2006.

Reebok is now collaborating with streetwear brands like Bodega, Bape, and Maison Margiela to further expand its customer base. We’re excited to see what Reebok releases are still to come!
