The history of Vans begins in 1966
Brothers Paul Van Doren and James Van Doren opened their first retail store, “The Van Doren Rubber Company,” in Anaheim, California. On the very first morning, the entrepreneurs sold their now-famous sneakers to 12 customers. The store carried only three silhouettes, priced between $2.49 and $4.99.
On top of that, there wasn’t enough change to give the customers their change back. The Van Doren brothers knew their customers were special, so they told them to take the shoes home and come back the next day to pay.
And sure enough, all the customers came back to the store to pay. For the two of them, this was proof of a great product and loyal customers.
The original version of the famous Vans logo didn’t appear until the early 1970s. Mark, the son of James Van Doren, designed the iconic logo as a stencil to be spray-painted onto his skateboards.
He was only 13 years old, but the company approved his design and incorporated it into the heel tab of their shoes, the Vans Style 95.

Inspired by his son’s interest, the president and co-owner of the California-based shoe company eventually began creating more skate sneakers. The “House of Vans” expanded rapidly, and by the mid-1970s, almost all Southern California skaters either owned or were familiar with the Vans brand and its sneakers.
Vans is now known worldwide, not just among skaters, but also among athletes and fashion-conscious people. Collaborations with Supreme, Bape, CDG, The North Face, and many others are making the brand increasingly popular and bringing in millions for the company every year.
